Malam Suleiman Ahmed, the Special Assistant to Sen. Shehu Sani (APC- Kaduna), on Politics and Ideology in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) today in Kaduna while reacting to the alleged suspension of the senator by the Tudun Wada North, Ward 6 of APC made it clear that nothing will deter his principal from criticising the "anti-people" policies of the state government.

"This letter is not relevant; it has no value to us; this letter will energise him the more; it will strengthen his resolve to criticise the government of the state if it goes wrong.

"The senator will continuously criticise any (government) policy that is anti-people up to the end of (his tenure in) the Senate and beyond.

"So if you feel that the senator should not criticise the government of the day because he is part of the party that brought the current government to power, then when he comes out to re-contest in 2019, do not vote for him.


"He will criticise the government, whether or not he comes back as a senator in 2019.

"This is because Sani has been consistent in his criticism of anti-democratic processes and elements; he did not start his criticism (in the current) democratic (dispensation).

"He has been doing criticism anti-people policies right from the military era. That's what has taken caused his imprisonment on several occasions," Ahmed said.


He however noted that the senator would consider seeking legal redress if served with a genuine suspension letter in line with standard procedure.

Reuters: Syrian army, backed by air strikes, advances toward southern town

Syrian troops backed by heavy aerial bombardment pushed toward a strategic town in the southern province of Deraa on Tuesday after capturing a nearby military base, the army said.

The Syrian army said it retook Brigade 82, one of the largest bases north of the mainly rebel-held town of Sheikh Maskin, whose capture by rebels earlier this year threatened the army's supply routes to the south.

A group monitoring the war said later on Tuesday that insurgents were putting up fierce resistance and that fighting raged on, counting more than two dozen air strikes during the assault.

SoldiersThe Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) group has urged the Federal Government to reinstate the soldiers jailed for cowardice against the Boko Haram Insurgency.

The group made the appeal on Tuesday in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital during a meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami.

Led by BBOG’s Co-convener, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, they presented several issues before the Attorney General, including an immediate recall of the military men who were jailed for cowardice at the war front without arms.

The group also asked the Federal Government to make public to Nigerians, the details of the Fact-Finding Committee report on the mass abduction of the Chibok girls in April, 2014.

In his response, Mr Malami advised the BBOG group to explore the Freedom of Information Bill and make their request in a letter to the Federal Government.

He assured the group that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration would continue to stand by justice, especially through a newly established national prosecution team set up by the government.

The Nigerian Army had months ago arraigned 71 soldiers on several count charges including criminal conspiracy, conspiracy to commit mutiny, insubordinate behaviour and false accusation.

They were tried and discharged on some charges but found guilty and convicted on other charges including mutiny.

Five of the soldiers were discharged and acquitted while one was sentenced to 28 days in prison with hard labour.

The Army authority subsequently commuted judgement in the case of the other soldiers, who had earlier been sentenced to death by firing squad in January and March 2015, by separate General Court Martials.

According to the Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Usman, the decision followed an order by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, to examine the merit of each case.

The Ogun Government has concluded arrangements to connect civil servants to Free Voice Over Internet Protocol to enhance productivity and hitch-free communication in the discharge of their official duties.

Government is also set to establish a data centre across the three senatorial districts in the state to give room for rural participation in governance.

Mrs Olatundun Adekunte, the Director of Information Technology in the Bureau of Information Technology, made this known while speaking with newsmen on Tuesday in Abeokuta.

She explained the device would be put in place at the Oke-Mosan Government Secretariat in the state capital to allow civil servants access to free calls during official working hours.


Adekunte also said that arrangements were being made to procure mobile phones and other accessories for the workers.

amosunOgun State House of Assembly has passed the 2016 Appropriation Bill of 200.2 billion Naira.

The original amount sent to the lawmakers was reduced by about 74 million Naira from the total of 200.274 billion Naira presented to the House by the State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, last month.

The passage of the Bill was sequel to the presentation of the report of the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation chaired by Honourable Akanbi Bankole, who later moved the motion for its adoption.

The Bill was passed, with an amendment in recurrent expenditure of the estimates of the State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Bureau of Tertiary Education as well as Signage and Advertising Agency.

Also, the revenue targets of the State Ministry of Information and Strategy, State Environmental Protection Agency, Judicial Service Commission, Housing Corporation, Hospital Management Board, Bureau of Information Technology and the State Hospital, Ota were slightly adjusted.

The appropriation Bill allocated 89.908 billion Naira for recurrent, 11 billion Naira for consolidated revenue fund charges including pensions and gratuities while 99.291 billion Naira was earmarked for capital expenditure.

Passing the Bill at the plenary on Tuesday, through a motion for the third reading moved by the Majority Leader, Honourable Adeyinka Mafe, seconded by Honourable Victor Fasanya and supported by the Whole House, the Speaker, Honourable Suraju Ishola Adekunbi ordered that the clean copy of the Bill be sent to the Governor for his assent.

The kidnappers of Bayelsa Commissioner for Local Government, Mrs Serefina Otazi, who was kidnapped 5 days to Christmas at gunpoint at Ogbia Local Government area on her way to a funeral, are now demanding a sum of N40m for her release. According to a family member, the kidnappers contacted them and demanded the sum.


Otazi was abducted less than 24 hours after Governor Seriake Dickson's sister, Nancy Dickson, was kidnapped.  Mrs. Dickson has also not yet been released by her kidnappers.

Washington Post: Airstrike kills Islamic State leader in Syria with direct tie to the Paris attacks, U.S. military says

The U.S.-led military coalition against the Islamic State killed a key leader in Syria who had direct ties to the terrorists who carried out the attacks in Paris and was actively planning more attacks against the West, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

Army Col. Steve Warren, the top spokesman for the coalition, told reporters that Charaffe al Mouadan was killed Dec. 24 in an airstrike. He declined to say where in Syria the attack occurred, and described it as part of a wave of attacks carried out since Dec. 7 that have killed 10 Islamic State leaders, including others involved in "external operations" that included plotting attacks in the West.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has been ordered to serve 18 months in jail for bribery. Olmert had been sentenced to six years by a lower court in 2014, but this has now been reduced by the Supreme Court.

The 70-year-old was convicted over a property deal that took place while he served as mayor of Jerusalem, prior to becoming prime minister in 2006.

Olmert, who stepped down in 2009, will become the first former Israeli head of government to go to prison. He is due to begin his sentence on 15 February.


The Supreme Court acquitted Olmert of receiving a 500,000-shekel ($130,000; £86,000) bribe from the developers of Holyland, a controversial block of flats in Jerusalem, after he appealed against the March 2014 conviction.

A separate conviction of illicitly taking a 60,000-shekel payment for another project was upheld.

Several other government officials and businesspeople were convicted alongside Olmert in 2014.


In a separate case, Olmert was sentenced earlier this year to eight months in prison for fraud and breach of trust for accepting illegal payments from an American businessman.

The Hill: State Department defends naming 'bringing peace' to Syria as 2015 win

The State Department is defending naming "bringing peace" to Syria as one of its 2015 accomplishments.

The claim was made in a Dec. 24 blog post written by John Kirby, the assistant secretary of State for the bureau of public affairs.

Deputy spokesman Mark Toner on Monday called it a "truthful claim."

"Now look, the operative word there is bringing, not brought, so we're bringing peace and security to Syria," he told reporters, adding that it's a "mistaken impression" to think that Kirby is implying that the country's multi-pronged conflict has been resolved.

Kirby, in the blog post, noted that while the Syrian conflict "has continued to unfold in tragic ways," the United States has given humanitarian aid and pushed for a political transition.
