VOA: Official: US-led Airstrikes Kill 2,500 IS Militants in December

U.S.-led coalition airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Iraq and Syria killed about 2,500 militants in December, a military spokesman said.

Colonel Steve Warren told reporters that since coalition airstrikes began in September 2014, Islamic State has lost at least 20,000 square kilometers of land it once controlled. He said IS has not gained any land since May of last year.

"We believe ISIL is now in a defensive crouch," Warren said using another acronym for IS. "If you're part of ISIL, we will kill you. That's our rule"

VOA: Analysts: Anti-IS Coalition Strikes in Syria Yielding Results

An Islamic State judge is among the latest top jihadists to be killed in targeted coalition airstrikes that are seen as beginning to take a toll on the leadership ranks of the terrorist army.

U.S. officials vow 2016 will see many more strikes aimed at degrading the militant group's command and control structure and especially of its mid-level battlefield leadership.

U.S. commando raids designed to throw the group's leadership off balance are also more likely.

The targeted airstrikes appear to be alarming the group — that is if the latest IS propaganda video is anything to go by, analysts say.

WNU Editor: This is  why I have trouble trusting the Pentagon .... on the one hand they are claiming that they are making progress, but on the other hand they then say that the numbers of ISIS fighters remains the same .... Pentagon: ISIS Has Almost Same Number of Members as When U.S. Airstrikes Began (Washington Free Beacon). So which report/analysis is right?

dprThe Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) in Niger State has insisted that failure by any marketer in adherence to petroleum regulations will result into taking more stringent action in line with the law.

The Niger State Controller of DPR, Engineer Abdullahi Isah Jankara, said this in Minna at a meeting with the officials of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria on product supply to the state.

He vowed that the agency would intensify its surveillance in 2016 to cover every nook and cranny in Niger State.

The DPR boss also said that the agency would supervise the distribution of fuel to every part of the state at government regulated price, adding that the DPR was equipped both in logistics and security wise to bring sanity into the petroleum distribution in Nigeria without any hindrance.

He urged marketers to officially forward their complaints to the agency's office to find a lasting solution to them, commending marketers that had abided by the regulations as well as urged others to follow suit.

Mr Jankara noted that the DPR had ascertained noncompliance offences such as pump under delivery, profiteering, violation of DPR seals and diversion of petroleum products, adding that others were general safety at retail outlets and operating stations without DPR valid licenses.

In their response, the marketers commended the DPR officials for the meeting to brainstorm on the way forward in getting the available products at official price and how to protect their business in the state.

 Digitsole has unveiled a futuristic-looking pair of trainers described 'the world's first intelligent footwear' .The shoes which were unveiled  at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas automatically tighten, as well as heat the feet.


The Smartshoe design , currently a prototype takes its  inspiration from a sports car and lacks shoelaces instead tightening and loosening of  the shoe are  controlled by a companion app . The app controls  the shoe's central heating, which can keep feet as warm as 38°C (100°F),  according to Mashable .

The trainers have  Digitsole heated insoles and an integrated thermostat controls the temperature, causing the insole to heat up once it drops below a chosen setting. The insoles also contain a battery and a Bluetooth sensor.  The battery lasts between eight hours, if used continuously, or several days if used sparingly.

The insoles are charged with a micro-USB charger .They will even tell wearers when the soles have worn out and the trainers should be replaced.

Sensors in the soles count steps, so the distance travelled and calories burned can be shown on the app.

The trainers will be available in  the US and Europe from September at  $450 (£307) (N 103 K)

DoctorsSome resident doctors have staged a peaceful protest over the kidnap of their colleague last week in Delta State.

Members of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara and the state's chapter of the Medical Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) took to the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday to demand the release of Doctor Obiabo.

According to the doctors, “no fewer than 10 members of staff have been kidnapped and ransom demanded. In this particular case, the ransom of 15 million Naira has been demanded by the kidnappers before the victim is released”.

The ARD President, Dr. Innocent Okocha and the MDCAN Vice Chairman, Dr. Umuerri Ejiro, demanded the intervention of the Delta State government and other security agencies to ensure the release of their member in less than 48 hours.

Receiving the doctors on behalf of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, the Secretary to the State Government, Festus Agas, assured the doctors of the commitment of the present administration to safeguard lives and properties in the state.

The Spokesman of the Delta State Police Command, Celestina Kalu, also said that the Police was doing its best to ensure the release of the victim.

Washington Post: Germans outraged by mayor's advice for women after raft of harassment

The mayor of Cologne on Wednesday offered some poorly received advice to female residents of her city after a wave of New Year's Eve attacks that shocked Germany.

"There's always the possibility of keeping a certain distance of more than an arm's length — that is to say to make sure yourself you don't look to be too close to people who are not known to you, and to whom you don't have a trusting relationship," Henriette Reker said, according to Britain's Guardian newspaper.

Her advice, offered in response to a question about what women in Cologne can do to protect themselves, came during a news conference at which Reker issued her first public comments over reports from about 90 women alleging sexual harassment and thefts on New Year's Eve.

WNU Editor: The press coverage on this story is a few days late ... and where were the police? As for the comments from the mayor of  Cologne's .... they do not surprise me. She has (and is) one of the biggest advocates for an open border and to permit millions of refugees to come to Germany. She was even stabbed a day before her re-election last year on this very issue. The fact that there is now blow-back from her policies .... and it is now putting her in the spot-light as victims come forward .... has put her in a position that I am sure she feels very uncomfortable being in .... hence the denial and putting the blame on the victims. My prediction .... this is going to get worse. The majority of refugees who have entered Germany are single men and Muslim .... expect the cultural clashes to get worse.

Oyo-ItaPresident Muhammadu Buhari has sworn in Mrs Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita as the substantive Head of Civil Service of the Federation.

The inauguration took place on Wednesday at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The 51-year old Oyo-Ita is a chartered accountant from ‎Odukpani in Cross River State and was appointed as acting Head of Service by President Buhari on October 21, 2015.

Before then, she had been a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Speaking after the event, Mrs Oyo-Ita said her priority would be to “hasten some reforms that will have far-reaching impact on service delivery and the Nigerian economy”.

The event, which had the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and most Ministers in attendance, came up before the Federal Executive Council meeting.

This is interesting. Yunusa Hanidu shared these photos on Facebook alleging that petroleum is being diverted into Cameroon through Mambilla border. Mambilla is between Taraba State and Cameroon. Below is what he wrote:
