Reuters: Sunni states back Saudi Arabia in growing row with Iran

Saudi Arabia's Sunni allies rallied behind the kingdom on Monday and several joined Riyadh in severing or downgrading diplomatic relations with Tehran, deepening a sectarian split across the Middle East.

Bahrain and Sudan cut all ties with Iran, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), home to hundreds of thousands of Iranians, downgraded its relations. Saudi Arabia broke off relations on Sunday after a mob stormed its embassy in Tehran.

Shi'ite power Iran accused Saudi Arabia of using the attack on the embassy as an "excuse" to sever ties and further increase sectarian tensions, after Shi'ites across the world denounced Saudi Arabia's execution of Shi'ite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

WNU Editor: Sunni Arab countries like Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, etc. are probably not going to sever their ties with Iran.

Senate Chief Whip, Professor Olusola Adeyeye, believes members of the National Assembly and all government officials need to cut down on luxury in order to move Nigeria forward.

Prof. Adeyeye was on Channels Television's Politics Today to discuss the presidential media chat held on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 and the national issues that were tackled by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Professor Adeyeye was full of praise for President Buhari's honesty during the media chat, particularly in admitting that the government was not sure about the location and condition of the abducted Chibok girls.

“He spoke the truth. He did not try to over-sweeten the story as politicians would do, he was optimistic about the future but he also clearly made the nation know that there were problems ahead,” he said.

The APC Senator threw his weight behind the President's war on terrorism and corruption, noting that these were problems he inherited and should be commended for fighting.

He stated that “terrorism is not an issue that is solved overnight" and that the circumstances in which the war had been sabotaged in the past have made it more difficult.

Prof. Adeyeye also recalled how he had been an advocate of transparency and prudence in government during the 7th Assembly but one of the issues that came up during the presidential media chat was the proposed allocation of funds for the purchase of official cars for members of the National Assembly in the 8th Assembly which he also belongs.

President Buhari had frowned at the purported allocation of over 40billion naira for this purpose and the Senator agreed with the President.

“If I was president of Nigeria today, honestly to the extent possible I will end official cars for everybody – from President to the level 8 officer.

“We once had a republic where our head of state rode a Peugeot 504 and gave us what he called 'Operation Low Profile'. We must go back to that.

“A situation whereby we go through the streets of Abuja and everybody is riding SUVs, everybody is focusing on the senators because 109 of them are the ones who were elected. Ask yourself, 'what type of cars are the ministers riding? What type of cars are the judges riding? What type of cars are the DGs of parastatals riding?'

“My official car right now as the Chief Whip of the Senate is not as good as what the DGs of many parastatals are riding.

“What we need to do is to say 'regardless of your position, let's go back to Operation Low Profile'," the Senator said.

He insisted that the financial situation in Nigeria requires all citizens in government to make sacrifices.

“If we are going to correct this mess, we must correct it in every ministry, in every government department and across board.

Adeyeye, who represents Osun State in the Senate, commended President Buhari for his handling of other national issues during the presidential media chat.

A plane passenger who settled down to watch a pirated film got the shock of his life - when it turned out the actress who starred in the flick was coincidentally seated beside him.
Kriti Sanon ,an award-winning Bollywood actress has been celebrating the colossal success of her second big screen outing Dilwale.
But when the 25-year-old star spotted an aeroplane passenger using a personal projector to show the film on the craft, she tweeted her annoyance alongside his photo..

Migrant Crisis: Sweden Border Checks Come Into Force

As migrants continue to flock to Europe, Sweden has introduced identity checks for travellers from Denmark, in an attempt to reduce the number of migrants arriving in the country.

All travellers wanting to cross the Oresund Bridge by train or bus, or use ferry services, would be refused entry without the necessary documents.

Also, rail commuters heading to Sweden will now have to change trains at Copenhagen airport and go through identity checkpoints.

Sweden received more than 150,000 asylum applications in 2015.

An estimated 20,000 commuters daily cross the Oresund Bridge, which connects the Swedish cities of Malmo and Lund with the Danish capital, Copenhagen.

The Swedish government secured a temporary exemption from the European union’s open-border Schengen agreement, in order to impose the border controls.

The vast majority of commuters using the Oresund Bridge cross from Sweden, so the changes were expected to hit people hardest as they return from work during the evening rush hour.

To comply with the regulations, fencing has been erected around one of the platforms at the railway station at Copenhagen’s Kastrup Airport.

Police have also set up fencing at Hyllie, the first station on the Swedish side of the bridge, amid reports of plans for further ID checks there.

Sweden’s SJ train company said it would not have time to check people travelling between Copenhagen and Malmo over the Oresund Bridge.

Teachers Strike Over Unpaid Salaries In Kwara

Primary school teachers in Kwara State have embarked on strike to press home their demand for the payment of three months salary arrears.

The teachers, on Monday, insisted not to end the strike until their salary arrears are paid.

The Kwara State Government, however, pleaded with them to be patient till next week promising to settle and blamed their predicament on cash crunch in the country.

The Deputy State Chairman of Nigerian Union of Teachers, Toyin Salihu, wondered how they could be owed three months salary despite working till the end of the year.

Mr Salihu said that he had been made to let the government see reasons for the payment, but the teachers are being tossed around between the local governments and state government for settlement.

The State Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), who is also the Chairman of Ilorin East Local Government Area, Abdul-Lateef Okandeji, agreed that the local governments are in charge of the payments of the primary school teachers, but blamed the situation on dwindling revenue from federal allocation.

He further noted that efforts are on by ALGON to secure a bank loan to offset the salaries before the week runs out and pleaded with the teachers to sheath their swords for the benefit of the pupils.

The pupils, on the other hand, summed up the whole issue by appealing to relevant authorities to pay their teachers as the strike would affect their education if not settled on time.

The Chairman of Senate Committee on Land Transport has said the reported new vehicles worth N4.7 Billion are not personal vehicles to legislators, maintaining that they are meant for oversight functions.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, said that “I must tell you that issues were raised and like any government arm, what you find out is that you can only manage whatever is given to you in the budget.

“Let me go further by explaining that there is no new vehicle for any legislator as I’m speaking with you.

“But for those who came in, whether first, second or third term, the vehicles some of them used at their previous administrations, were sold out to them at the current price that was prevailing. The money for the cars sold, would go back to the system”, he said.

The Senator further shed more light into the transport loans and car allowance allocated to legislators.

“The revenue mobilisation and fiscal commission had in place the remuneration allowances and salaries of legislators.

“Whoever comes in as Senate President or occupy any leadership position at the Senate, will have to comply with all those indices in the remuneration package”, he explained.

Answering a question on how members of the National Assembly are looking critically at reducing their budgets, Senator Ashafa said that “I can give you for a fact that whatever is necessary to do in order to sacrifice in ensuring that the budget is lean, transparent and workable as far as President Muhammadu Buhari is concerned, we will buy into it.

“President Buhari had promised that he would have a closed door session with us, we are waiting for that and we will will be transparent about whatever will be discussed in the meeting.

“If the consensus is that, this vehicle issue should be desiccant, so be it. We are ready to sacrifice for the sake of moving this country ahead”, he added.

President Buhari had frowned at plans by the National Assembly to buy over 400 new vehicles worth N4.7 billion at a time the nation is facing cash crunch.

The President criticised the plan on Wednesday, December 30, during his first televised Presidential Media chat, saying he had rejected a plan to buy new vehicles for himself in the 2016 budget estimates.

“I turned down a N400 million bill for cars for the presidency, because the vehicles I am using are good enough for the next 10 years”, he said.

The Spanish Football League has announced this Monday the kick off time for the 23rd round of matches in La Liga. Barça will travel to the Ciutat de València stadium to take on Levante in a game that will kick off 12.00pm CET on Sunday 7 February.

After a month of January with several games at 4.00pm CET, Barça will face their first fixture of the campaign at 12.00pm CET. The last time the blaugranes played at this time was on 8 March 2015, Barça won 6-1 at Camp Nou against Rayo Vallecano.

In the game in the first half of the season at home against Levante, Barça won 4-1 thanks to goals from Bartra, Neymar and two from Messi. In their last visit to the Ciutat de València stadium, on Match Day 4 last season, Barça ran out 5-0 winners with goals from Neymar, Rakitic, Sandro, Pedro and Messi.

Saudi Arabia Breaks Off Ties With Iran After Al-Nimr Execution

Saudi Arabia has broken off diplomatic ties with Iran, amid a row over the Saudi execution of a prominent Shia Muslim cleric.

Saudi Foreign Minister, Adel Al-Jubeir, made the announcement after demonstrators stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran.

Sheikh Nimr Al-Nimr and 46 others were executed on Saturday after being convicted of terror-related offences.

Mr Jubeir said that all Iranian diplomats must leave Saudi Arabia within 48 hours and the kingdom is also recalling its diplomats from Tehran.

Iran is Saudi Arabia’s main regional rival – they back opposing sides in the conflicts in Syria and Yemen.

BBC reported that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had earlier warned that the Sunni Muslim Kingdom would face “divine revenge” for the execution – an act which also angered Shia Muslims elsewhere in the Middle East.

Ayatollah Khamenei called Sheikh Nimr a “martyr” who had acted peacefully.

Protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran late on Saturday, setting fire to the building before being driven back by police. The Saudi Foreign Ministry said none of its diplomats had been harmed in the incident.

Iran is Saudi Arabia’s main regional rival – they back opposing sides in the conflicts in Syria and Yemen.

Relations between the countries have been strained over various issues in recent decades, including Iran’s nuclear programme and deaths of Iranians at the Hajj pilgrimage in 1987 and again in 2015.

Former Prime Minister of the Central African Republic, Faustin Touadera, has taken a surprise lead in early results from the CAR’s presidential election.

30 candidates contested the poll, which is likely to go to a run-off between the top two on January 31, but Mr Touadera was not seen as a favourite.

He was a Prime Minister in the government of ex-president, Francois Bozize, ousted in 2013 by mainly Muslim Seleka rebels.

Voting took place on December 30, with UN troops guarding polling stations.

30 candidates vied to replace interim leader, Catherine Samba-Panza in the former French colony.

The CAR has been torn by sectarian violence since the Seleka rebels seized power in March 2013.

A band of mostly Christian militias, called the anti-Balaka, then took up arms against the Seleka.

CAR is one of the world’s poorest countries – yet it is rich in natural resources.

Elections also took place for the 149-seat National Assembly.

After seizing power, the Seleka rebels installed Michel Djotodia as the first Muslim leader of the majority Christian country.

But under pressure from regional leaders and former colonial power, France, Mr Djotodia stood down and was succeeded by Ms Samba-Panza.
