Reuters: Turkey's Erdogan cites Hitler's Germany as example of presidential system

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, who is pushing for executive powers, cites Hitler's Germany as an example of an effective presidential system, in comments broadcast by Turkish media on Friday.

Erdogan wants to change the Turkish constitution to turn the ceremonial role of president into that of a chief executive, a Turkish version of the system in the United States, France or Russia.

Asked on his return from a visit to Saudi Arabia late on Thursday whether an executive presidential system was possible while maintaining the unitary structure of the state, he said: "There are already examples in the world. You can see it when you look at Hitler's Germany.

"There are later examples in various other countries," he told reporters, according to a recording broadcast by the Dogan news agency.

A Turkish official told Reuters the comments had been taken out of context.

Premier League club, Watford, insists Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo, is not for sale “under any circumstances”.

Ighalo finished 2015 as the leading goalscorer in English league football after netting 30 goals in the past 12 months.

The Nigerian’s fine form in front of goal, which includes 14 goals in his debut Premier League campaign, has alerted Premier League big guns and more notably Spanish giants, Atletico Madrid.

Hornets boss, Quique Sánchez Flores believes Ighalo, who is on a five year contract, will stay until the end of the season.

Gordon G. Chang, Daily Beast: Now China Wants Okinawa, Site of U.S. Bases in Japan

Beijing is pushing out in all directions, from the South China Sea to several Japanese islands, with an eye on the eastern Pacific that laps American shores.

On the day after Christmas, three Chinese boats, one modified to carry four cannons, entered Japan's territorial waters surrounding the Senkaku Islands in the southern portion of the East China Sea. The move, a dangerous escalation, is the first time the People's Republic of China sent an armed vessel into an area that Tokyo claims as its own.

The sending of the three Chinese vessels on Dec. 26 appears to signal a new phase of incursions to grab not just the Senkaku Islands but the nearby—and far more important—Ryukyu Islands. Those include Okinawa, which hosts more than half of the 54,000 American military personnel in Japan, including those at Kadena Air Force Base, the Army's Fort Buckner and Torii Station, eight Marine Corps camps, as well as Air Station Futenma and Yontan Airfield, and the Navy's Fleet Activities Okinawa.

Geopolitically, Okinawa is key to the American-Japanese alliance and the heart of America's military presence in Japan. But if Beijing gets its way, U.S. military bases will be off Okinawa soon. And Japan will be out of Okinawa, too.

WNU Editor: These Chinese claims on the Ryukyu islands (Okinawa included) have been around for a long time. I even heard about it in the mid-1980s when I was working in China .... and even though I said that such claims were beyond ridiculous, my Chinese hosts were very blunt to me that these islands (like Taiwan) belong to them. 30 years later .... it looks like they are "upping" the pressure.

Manchester United Manager, Louis van Gaal, admits his side’s title chances could be over if the team cannot end their run of eight games without a win against Swansea.

United followed a run of four straight defeats with a goalless draw against struggling Chelsea on Tuesday.

The team’s dismal run of results which has included them being dumped out of the Champions League in the group stages, has led to widespread speculation that Van Gaal’s job is in jeopardy.

The Dutchman admits United must win on Saturday to maintain any realistic hope of overturning the nine-point deficit between themselves and Premier League leaders, Arsenal.

Some residents of Kaduna State have called on the government at all levels to intensify efforts in improving the economic fortunes of Nigeria, as the nation marks the New Year.

They made the call in separate interviews with Channels Television during the thanksgiving service held at various churches to mark the New Year.

While thanking God for sparing their lives and making them to see 2016, they, however, lamented that the economic environment of the nation left much to be desired.

While some of them celebrated the beginning of 2016 with fireworks and thanksgiving service at their various churches, others witnessed quietness and low-key celebration because of security challenges.

At Shiloh Baptist Church in Sabon-Tasha in the state capital, Reverend Joseph John Hayab, urged Nigerians to work hard in order to achieve their heart desires in the year.

He also urged them to support the government in achieving its policies and programmes for the development of the nation.

Some other that spoke, opined that the government should improve efforts in fashioning out policies and programmes that would fast-track the economy especially in addressing the lingering fuel scarcity, unemployment and insecurity in the land.

Other residents expressed great expectations from the All Progressive Congress-led government in 2016.

Dubai Investigates Skyscraper Fire

Authorities in Dubai have begun investigations into the cause of an inferno that engulfed a 63-storey luxury hotel in the city centre on New Year’s eve.

Firefighters managed to subdue the blaze, but part of the Address downtown hotel is still smouldering.

According to the BBC, 16 people were hurt in the incident.

While the Address Hotel was in flames, a fireworks show went ahead at the Burj Khalifa tower nearby, the world’s tallest building and an iconic symbol of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Munich Stations Closed Over Terror Threats

Police have evacuated two major railway stations in Munich after an intelligence agency warned Germany of an imminent terror attack.

Authorities received information that about 6 suicide bombers from the so-called Islamic State (IS) could target the central station or Pasing station.

Cities across Europe have been on high alert for a possible New Year’s eve attack.

The alert in Munich came just hours before midnight and Police warned people to stay away from crowds.

In the meantime, both stations have reopened after security agencies combed the areas.
