The final touches are being put on at the Kongresshaus in Zurich, Switzerland, where on Monday evening at 6.15pm CET the 2015 FIFA Ballon d'Or Gala will be the centre of attention for the entire football world.

FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr, who are two of the three finalists for the award, will travel to Zurich on Monday and will be in attendance when the envelope is unsealed and the winner's name is called out. For Messi, this is the ninth consecutive year he has been named a finalist for the award, the most coveted individual prize in world football.

Messi is going for his fifth Ballon d'Or, a jaw-dropping feat considering the fact that in the history of the award, he is the only person to have won it more than three times. Four other players have won it exactly three times — Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini, Marco van Basten and Cristiano Ronaldo — while just five other players have ever won it twice. Messi won his unprecedented fourth straight Ballon d'Or in 2013 and is now looking to distance himself from the pack.

Messi's teammate at FC Barcelona, Neymar Jr., has been named a finalist for the very first time. The other finalist for this year's award is Real Madrid's Ronaldo, who won the last two editions.

Messi and Ronaldo have scooped up every Ballon d'Or for the last seven years. That number is almost certain to rise to eight on Monday.

The FC Barcelona expedition is expected depart from Barcelona-El Prat Airport are noon on Monday, headed by Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu. Bartomeu will be accompanied by the Vice President, Jordi Mestre; the Football Director, Javier Bordas; the Professionals Sports Director, Albert Soler; and the First Team Technical Secretary, Robert Fernández.

Also joining the Club will be ex-players and Ballon d'Or winners Hristo Stoichkov and Luis Suárez Miramontes.

The FIFPro World XI and other awards

Aside from the Ballon d'Or, FC Barcelona is up for several other awards as well. Ten FCB players out of a total of 55 nominees could be named to the FIFA FIFPro World XI. They include defenders Dani Alves, Gerard Piqué, Javier Mascherano and Jordi Alba; midfielders Andrés Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitic; and forwards Leo Messi, Neymar Jr. and Luis Suárez.

FC Barcelona manager Luis Enrique is one of three finalists for the Coach of the Year award, along with former Barça and current Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola and Chile national team coach Jorge Sampaoli.

Messi is not only opting for the Ballon d'Or, either. He is also a finalist for the Puskás Award, for the best goal of the year. Messi was nominated for the award for his wonder goal against Athletic Club Bilbao in the 2015 Copa del Rey Final. The other two Puskás finalists are Alessandro Florenzi of AS Roma and the Brazilian Wendell Lira.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has described the yesterday's arrest and detention of the Kogi State Deputy Governor-Elect, Hon James Abiodun Faleke and Mr Mohammed Audu, son of the late former Governor of Kogi State and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Abubakar Audu, as a confirmation of his prediction that penchant for dictatorship will rise this year with rampant disobedience human rights abuses by the APC government of President Mohammadu Buhari.

The governor said even though Faleke and Audu were released very late on Saturday by men of the Department of State Security (DSS), Nigerians should by the arrest brace up for a full-blown dictatorship. In a statement issued on Sunday, by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said "it is now clear that Nigerians can no longer hold opinion different from that of President Buhari and his faction of the APC and this should worry lovers of democracy in the country."

He said arresting and humiliating Faleke and Audu by the DSS, just because they choose to pursue their rights within the ambit of the law was a dangerous trend that all Nigerians, irrespective of political party affiliation must condemn.

Governor Fayose said; "They started with Senate President, Bukola Saraki; later, the DSS invaded the Akwa-Ibom State Government House and those who should speak out kept silent because of politics. "The DSS moved against the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col Sambo Dasuki, invading his residences in a commando liked manner and when he got order from the court for the DSS to vacate his house, the order was ignored.

Up till today, Dasuki is still in detention despite that he was granted bail by the court and he met the bail conditions. "When all these happened to Dasuki, many of those who should talk, especially our so-called human rights activists kept silent because of politics. "Now that it happened to Faleke and Audu, members of President Buhari's party who are not on the same page with him on the Kogi State election, should we also keep silent because it is APC affairs? Definitely no!

"We are not going to keep silent because we are not in this to protect the interest of any political interest. Rather, our concern is the survival of democracy, which is obviously being threatened by the forces that have turned the DSS to their agent of political victimisation. "Most importantly, Nigerians should know that tyranny does not know political boundary.

The moment tyranny becomes full-blown, it does not even know its own family members. The only concern is its selfish interests and anyone that is against those interests must be pull down or whip to line."

New York foodies who find themselves with spare spending cash are being offered a particularly pricey pastry: a $100 doughnut covered in 24-karat gold flakes.

The Manila Social Club, a Brooklyn eatery owned by Filipino brothers Bjorn De La Cruz and Samuel Ware, unveiled The Golden Cristal Ube Donut in an Instagram post that gave the public a first look at the confection, as well as revealing its $100 price tag.

The doughnut contains ube, a purple yam found in several of The Manila Social Club's dishes, as well as vintage Cristal, 24-karat edible gold flakes and gold dust.

"The honey notes from the Cristal pair well with the ube mousse," one of the brothers said. They also disclosed they have sold more than five dozen of the doughnuts after it was unveiled. Lol, if I buy one, I might probably not finish it in a day. May be the next day sha and after that, no more. Except someone deems it fit to buy for me.

As Russia begins the New Year, two recent events - an inability to pay salaries and a new law on currency exchanges - show the country is hurtling rapidly back to the future. Fiona Clark sees troubled times ahead.

On Christmas Eve we couldn't get a taxi using any of the usual apps, so we decided to hitch home after dinner. That's not such an unusual practice in Russia, in fact since Soviet times it's been an accepted way for people to subsidize their incomes by picking up strangers and charging them a small fee to drop them wherever they want. Foreigners call them "gypsy cabs."

The man who picked us up was very pleased to finally get a fare. "You're the first people to put your hands out for ages. No one puts their hands out anymore," he said, lamenting the effect of the taxi apps that are killing the ordinary man's revenue supply. "I used to make 5,000 rubles (62 euros; $68) a night doing this, now I'm lucky if I make 2,000 a week." Then he went on to explain why he needed the money.

WNU Editor: Its starting. While everyone that I know in Russia is still receiving their salaries and pensions .... the stories are starting to come in from the regions outside of the major cities that cut-backs and delays in paying salaries are now becoming a fact of life. Russian social media is also abuzz with these reports .... and dissatisfaction is growing. As I had mentioned a few weeks ago .... Putin and his government have only this year to fix Russia's economy .... if not .... protests and strikes are going to became a way of life throughout much of the country.

Fire Razes Nasarawa’s Major Timber Market

Business women and men at a major timber market in Lafia, Nasarawa State are counting their loss after fire brought down part of the market at around 1:00am yesterday. According to eyewitnesses, they can't really tell what brought about the fire but they suddenly saw smoke and alerted the state fire service corporation. They also claim the fire fighters came to the scene with empty tanks and so they did little or nothing to help the situation.

Market men and women have been counting their losses, and they say they lost millions to the fire.

The State Chief Fire Officer, Mr Dogara Dalhatu has however replied those saying fire fighters came to the scene with empty tanks saying it is nothing but a lie. He however said the cause of the fire is yet to be established and commiserated with the victims.

It has been quite hectic in Bayelsa State where agents of political parties are at loggerheads over results so far released by the returning officer in the Bayelsa supplementary elections.

It has been drama at the collation centre where agents of the PDP and APC have made several allegations of malpractice.

One of the agents also tried to provoke the returning officer. But he calmly managed the situation.

After the announcement of the results from polling units in Ekeremor Local Government Area, the APC's agent described the process as flawed.

He said his party had written a petition detailing electoral malpractices, and demanded that the state returning officer attend to the petition first.

However, the PDP agent insisted that the APC had hijacked the votes they scored in the local government and demanded that they should be cancelled.

In Nembe Local Government Area, results were cancelled in three units of Kolo Asiri ward.

According to the INEC returning officer for Nembe, the cancellation in two of the units was owing to non-use of the card reader, while one unit was cancelled because of over-voting.

The APC agent objected to the reason of card-reader failure given for cancellation of the results in those units. He insisted that the local government collation had exercised undue jurisdiction in cancelling the results.

DW: MSF: Rocket strike on clinic in Yemen kills four

A clinic operated by international medical group Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in northern Yemen has been hit by a rocket, with four people killed, the group says. It says it does not know who fired the missile.

The missile hit the clinic in the Razeh district of Saada province in northern Yemen, communications officer Malak Shaher said on Sunday.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) also announced the attack on its Twitter account.

Even though the final result from Southern Ijaw Local Government Area is being awaited in the Bayelsa State gubernatorial supplementary election, Governor Dickson has already started celebrations in Government House Yenagoa.

The Independent National Electoral Commission cancelled the December 5, 2015 governorship election in Brass, Ekeremor, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Nembe, Ogbia, Sagbama, Southern Ijaw, Yenagoa- which led to the declaration of the governorship election as inconclusive.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Bayelsa state, Prof. Zana Akpagu will on Sunday, January 10, declare the next governor of the state after the much awaited Southern Ijaw result comes in.

In an election that's resulted in bloodshed from violence and ballot boxes snatching and voting disruption, Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress hopes to unseat sitting governor, Seriake Dickson.
In that election, Dickson polled 105,748 votes while Sylva had 72,594 votes. Thus far, the incumbent governor, Dickson is in the lead.
From the six local government councils announced, Dickson got 6069 votes, while Sylva had 4042 votes.

Shitte Members And Muslims Clash In Jos

There has been a clash between Shitte members and rival Muslim youths in Jos. The clash has left one person dead.

According to report hundreds of Shitte women dressed in black had staged a protest in Jos demanding the release of their leader El-Zakzaky, his wife and some other members who have being in detention since the 12^th of December after being arrested by the army during a clash that left some members dead.

Aside requesting for the release of their leader they are also requesting for the release of the dead bodies of their members killed by the army for proper burial according to Islamic traditions.

The protest which started off as peaceful turned violent leading to a clash and the death of one person. Security personnel have since been deployed to strategic places in the state while worship places are being heavily guarded.

All forms of rallies , protests and processions have been banned in the state or must get the permission of the police before commencing
